Want to replace moss filled front lawn with small stones. Will covering with fabric then stones work?

Front lawn full of moss and is in shade all day, drainage not great and loads of roots from 'the tree'. Thought about removing turf and replacing with new turf but.... I think stones may be the answere. Will covering moss/gr with fabric and then cover with stones work? Digging down I don't think is an option (roots).
