How safe are the VW rabbits?

i want my girlfriend to be as absolutly safe as possible, i have been told that the VW rabbits are safe cars. this girl means everything to me and i want it to be as safe as possible. she said she wanted something cute, but i want something that she would like and that it is safe. i cant be haveing her drive a pop can everywhere. are they safe dependable cars. i can work on cars so it wouldnt be a problem to fix if she got in a wreck. i just want something that i can count on keeping her safe
